Windang is a laid-back coastal suburb at the southern entrance to Lake Illawarra, where the lake meets the Pacific Ocean. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "a place of many birds," and today it offers a serene escape with a long surf beach, a lively boat harbour, and a classic Aussie fish-and-chip shop that draws locals from miles around. The headland lookout provides sweeping views of the lake, ocean, and the distant escarpment, making it a perfect spot for a sunset stroll.
Highlights & What to See
- Windang Beach – A patrolled surf beach with consistent waves and a long stretch of sand, ideal for swimming, bodyboarding, or simply walking to the southern end where the lake meets the sea.
- Lake Illawarra – The lake is a haven for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Hire a kayak from the boat ramp and explore the calm waters fringed by mangroves and birdlife.
- Windang Boat Harbour – Watch fishing boats come and go, grab a coffee at the kiosk, or buy fresh seafood straight off the boat. The harbour is also the departure point for chartered fishing trips.
- Windang Headland Reserve – A short walk up to the lookout rewards you with panoramic views over the lake, ocean, and the Illawarra escarpment. It’s a prime whale-watching spot during migration season (May–November).
- Fish and Chips at the Windang Fish Shop – A local institution since the 1970s, this unassuming takeaway serves some of the freshest battered fish and chips on the south coast. Grab a paper-wrapped parcel and eat on the beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Windang is a half-day stop or a relaxed overnight. Spend 2–3 hours enjoying the beach, a walk on the headland, and a fish-and-chip lunch. If you’re into water sports, add another hour for kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake. For a longer stay, book a night at one of the beachfront holiday parks and enjoy sunrise over the ocean.
