Tomaree Head Summit Walk
Tomaree Head Summit Walk is a short but spectacular coastal hike in the Hunter Valley region that delivers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the New South Wales coast. This 2.2-kilometre return trail climbs through coastal heath and windswept scrub to the top of Tomaree Head, where you're rewarded with a 360-degree vista over the sparkling waters of Port Stephens, the sandy sweep of Shoal Bay, and the offshore islands of the Tasman Sea. It's a must-do for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Viewpoint – The main event: a jaw-dropping panorama of Port Stephens, Yacaaba Head, and the blue Pacific stretching to the horizon. Best in the late afternoon for golden light.
- World War II Gun Emplacements – Scattered along the summit are remnants of wartime fortifications, including a gun emplacement and bunkers, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the walk.
- Coastal Heathland – The trail winds through low-growing Banksia and coastal scrub, home to native birds and wildflowers that bloom in spring.
- Whale Watching – During migration season (May–November), the summit offers excellent land-based whale watching opportunities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow around 1–1.5 hours for the return walk, including time to soak up the views and explore the historic gun emplacements. The trail is steep in sections but well-maintained, so it's accessible to most fitness levels. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds, and bring water and a hat – there's little shade.
