Stretching from the sparkling beaches of Noosa to the wild surf of the Cooloola Coast, the Sunshine Coast is a laid-back slice of Queensland paradise that feels a world away from the high-rises of the Gold Coast. With its national park–fringed coastline, artisan food scene and relaxed hinterland villages, this is a place where you can hike through ancient rainforest in the morning, paddle a crystal-clear river in the afternoon, and dine on locally caught seafood as the sun sets over the Pacific. The Sunshine Coast rewards those who slow down and explore beyond the sand.
Highlights & What to See
- Noosa National Park – Follow the coastal track from Noosa Heads for jaw-dropping views over granite headlands, spot koalas dozing in eucalypts, and cool off in secluded coves like Tea Tree Bay.
- Australia Zoo – The late Steve Irwin’s legacy lives on at this sprawling wildlife sanctuary, where you can hand-feed kangaroos, watch crocodile shows and get up close with koalas and wombats.
- Eumundi Markets – Every Wednesday and Saturday, this hinterland town bursts into life with hundreds of stalls selling local art, handmade jewellery, organic produce and street food – arrive early for the best finds.
- Coolum Beach – A classic surf beach with a relaxed vibe, backed by the volcanic peak of Mount Coolum – climb the summit for panoramic coastal views.
- Glass House Mountains National Park – These dramatic volcanic plugs rise abruptly from the coastal plain; hike the Mount Ngungun summit trail for a 360-degree view of the entire region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to five days gives you a satisfying taste of the Sunshine Coast’s diversity. Spend your first day exploring Noosa’s beaches and national park trails, then dedicate a day to the hinterland – Eumundi Markets (if it’s a market day) and the Glass House Mountains. A third day could be split between Australia Zoo and a relaxed afternoon at Coolum or Mooloolaba. If you have more time, add a day trip to the Great Sandy National Park or the Mary River for kayaking with turtles.
