Stirling is a tiny, unassuming hamlet in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine country, but it packs a punch for those who know where to look. This is the kind of place where you can taste world-class Semillon from a fifth-generation winemaker, then wander through a historic cottage garden or spot kangaroos at dusk. It's an authentic, unhurried slice of the Hunter, perfect for travellers who want to sidestep the bus-tour crowds and connect with the region's real character.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount View Road cellar doors – Stirling anchors the northern end of this iconic wine trail. Don't miss Mount Pleasant Wines for its historic cellar and museum-like collection of old vintages, and De Iuliis Wines for a modern tasting room with a gorgeous outlook over the Brokenback Range.
- Stirling Cottage Garden – A labour of love by local volunteers, this heritage garden beside the church is a riot of colour in spring and a peaceful spot for a picnic. Look for the old stone well and roses.
- Hunter Valley Gardens – Just a five-minute drive south in Pokolbin, these sprawling formal gardens offer 14 themed sections, from a Japanese garden to a Storybook Garden that delights kids. Allow at least two hours.
- Sunset kangaroo spotting – Head to the open paddocks along Lovedale Road around dusk. Eastern grey kangaroos often graze in large mobs here, providing a classic Australian photo op.
- Hunter Distillery – For a change of pace, sample small-batch gin and vodka at this boutique distillery. The tasting room is intimate and the staff are happy to talk botanicals.
Suggested Time to Spend
Stirling itself is best experienced as a half-day stop – enough for a couple of cellar-door tastings, a wander through the cottage garden, and a relaxed lunch at one of the nearby winery cafés. However, to appreciate the Hunter Valley properly, base yourself in the area for at least two nights. This gives you time to explore Stirling's quieter charms, then spend a full day visiting the bigger-name wineries around Pokolbin and a second day venturing into the Brokenback Range or the historic town of Wollombi.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lovedale – A quieter wine sub-region with a handful of boutique wineries and the Lovedale Long Lunch event in June.
- Wollombi – A historic village 30 minutes west, known for its old pub, Wollemi National Park access, and the quirky Dr Jurd's Jungle.
- Broke – A scenic drive north leads to this tiny village surrounded by vineyards and the foothills of the Brokenback Range, perfect for a cycling tour.
