Perched on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain, the Old Eucla Telegraph Station is a hauntingly beautiful ruin where the outback meets the Southern Ocean. Once a vital link in the Overland Telegraph Line connecting Adelaide to Perth, this limestone station now stands half-buried in drifting sand, offering a poignant glimpse into Australia's pioneering communications history and the harsh beauty of the Great Australian Bight.
Highlights & What to See
- The Telegraph Station Ruins – Explore the weather-beaten limestone walls and rooms slowly reclaimed by sand, with interpretive signs detailing the lives of the operators who kept the line open in isolation.
- Sand Drifts & Coastal Views – Climb the shifting dunes for panoramic views over the Eucla Basin and the dramatic cliffs of the Bight – a stunning contrast of white sand and deep blue sea.
- Eucla Museum – Located a short drive away in the modern town, this small museum houses photographs, telegraph equipment and stories from the station's 1877–1927 operation.
- Historic Cemetery – A short walk from the ruins, the old cemetery contains graves of early settlers and telegraph workers, with headstones etched by wind and salt.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1–2 hours to wander the ruins, climb the dunes and soak in the coastal views. Combine with a stop at the Eucla Museum (30 minutes) and a walk to the cemetery (20 minutes) for a half-day visit. The site is best visited in the cooler morning or late afternoon light, which casts dramatic shadows on the sand-buried walls.
