Perched high above the Wolgan Valley, Newnes Plateau is a wild, windswept tableland that feels a world away from the Hunter Valley’s vineyard-laced lowlands. This is bushwalking and four-wheel-drive country, where sandstone pagodas, deep gorges and silent forests reward those who venture up the escarpment. The air is noticeably cooler and the sky bigger, and you’re as likely to spot a lyrebird scratching in the undergrowth as you are to have a trail entirely to yourself. It’s a place for travellers who want to swap wine tastings for wilderness – at least for a day.
Highlights & What to See
- Glow Worm Tunnel – An abandoned railway tunnel now home to thousands of bioluminescent glow worms. Bring a torch, switch it off partway and watch the ‘stars’ appear on the ceiling.
- Panther’s Glen – A short walk leads to a fern-lined canyon with a waterfall cascading into a deep, cold pool – perfect for a bracing dip on a hot day.
- Newnes Hotel Ruins – The ghostly remains of an early 20th-century pub and shale-oil mining town. A fascinating glimpse into the plateau’s boom-and-bust past.
- Wolgan Lookout – Sweeping views over the Wolgan Valley and the dramatic escarpment walls. Best in the late afternoon when the sandstone glows amber.
- Deep Pass – A challenging but rewarding 6 km return hike through towering sandstone pagodas and heathland, with bird’s-eye views of the Grose Valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle Newnes Plateau as a day trip from the Hunter Valley or the Blue Mountains, but to really soak up the solitude, an overnight camp at one of the free campgrounds (like Baal Bone Gap) is magic. If you’re pushed for time, focus on the Glow Worm Tunnel and a lookout stop – that’s a solid half-day. For hikers, allow a full day for Deep Pass or Panther’s Glen plus a wander around the historic ruins.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wollemi National Park – The vast wilderness that surrounds the plateau, home to the prehistoric Wollemi Pine and superb canyoning.
- Mudgee – A scenic 90-minute drive west, offering a different wine region with a laid-back, small-town vibe.
- Lithgow – The nearest town for supplies, with the interesting Eskbank House museum and the Zig Zag Railway heritage train.
- Blue Mountains National Park – The plateau’s southern edge butts up against the Blue Mountains, making it easy to combine with the Three Sisters and Echo Point.
- Hunter Valley Wine Country – Return to the vines via Wollombi or Broke, stopping at cellar doors for a well-earned tasting after your wilderness fix.
