Mount Macedon rises above the Hunter Valley with a quiet grandeur that feels a world away from the region’s famous vineyards. This forested peak offers sweeping views across the valley and a sense of peace that makes it a perfect counterpoint to the cellar-door circuit. It’s a place where you can stretch your legs on a short bushwalk, breathe in eucalyptus-scented air, and watch the light shift over the vines below.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The short, steep walk to the top rewards you with panoramic views of the Hunter Valley and, on clear days, the distant Barrington Tops. It’s especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
- Mount Macedon Walking Track – A 2.5 km return trail through dry sclerophyll forest, perfect for a morning leg-stretcher. Look for wallabies and listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Historic Graves & Ruins – Scattered among the bush are relics from early European settlement, including a few old graves and stone foundations that hint at the mountain’s past as a mining and timber area.
- Birdwatching – Bring binoculars; the forest is home to crimson rosellas, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours if you’re just doing the summit walk and taking in the view. If you want to explore the side trails and have a picnic, allow half a day. It works well as a morning outing before hitting the wineries – the fresh air and exercise will sharpen your palate for the tasting sessions to come.
