Plunging 100 metres into a fern-lined gorge, Ebor Falls is one of the New South Wales highlands' most dramatic natural spectacles. Located within Guy Fawkes River National Park, this two-tiered waterfall thunders over ancient basalt columns, creating a misty spray that catches the light on sunny afternoons. The site is a favourite stop for travellers driving between Sydney and Brisbane, offering a refreshing dose of untamed nature without a long detour.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls Lookout: Wheelchair-accessible boardwalks lead to a platform perched right at the brink of the upper cascade – feel the roar and the cool spray on your face.
- Lower Falls Walk: A short but steep track descends through wet sclerophyll forest to a vantage point where you can see both tiers and the gorge stretching below.
- Basalt Columns: The hexagonal columns exposed in the cliff face are remnants of a volcanic eruption 40 million years ago – a geological highlight.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, peregrine falcons and the elusive glossy black-cockatoo that feed on casuarina cones.
- Picnic Area: The grassy clearing near the upper carpark has tables and barbecues – a perfect spot for lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour here, which is enough to take in both lookouts and soak up the scenery. If you're keen on a longer visit, combine it with a walk along the Guy Fawkes River or a picnic – half a day feels unhurried. The falls are at their most powerful after rain, but the basalt columns and gorge views are impressive year-round.
