Rising abruptly from the flat, sunburnt plains of the Riverina region, Cocoparra National Park is a dramatic red-rock oasis that feels a world away from the nearby wine country. This rugged park, centred on the Cocoparra Range, is a haven for walkers, birdwatchers and anyone craving genuine outback solitude. The contrast of ancient cypress pines, rocky gorges and seasonal wildflowers against the stark landscape creates a photographer’s paradise — and a perfect off-grid detour from the Hunter Valley’s cellar doors.
Highlights & What to See
- Woolshed Falls: A short walk leads to this seasonal cascade pouring over a sandstone ledge; best after rain, when the water spills into a tranquil pool perfect for a picnic.
- Binghi Gap lookout: A steep but rewarding climb up the escarpment rewards with sweeping views across the Murrumbidgee River valley and the distant Snowy Mountains.
- Jack’s Creek walking track: A 6 km return hike through cypress pine forest and rocky gullies, offering a real sense of the park’s geology and birdlife — listen for the bell-like call of the white-winged chough.
- Birdwatching: Over 120 species have been recorded, including the rare painted honeyeater, superb parrot and turquoise parrot. Bring binoculars and patience.
- Wildflower displays: In spring (August–October), the understorey erupts with everlastings, orchids and wattles, painting the rocky slopes in bursts of yellow and pink.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that a full day is ample to tackle a couple of walks, enjoy a picnic at Woolshed Falls and soak up the views from Binghi Gap. If you’re a keen hiker or birdwatcher, consider an overnight stay at the basic campground (no facilities) to experience the park at dawn and dusk, when wildlife is most active. Half-day visits work well if you’re using the park as a scenic break while driving between Griffith and the Hunter Valley.
