Nestled in the foothills of the Brokenback Range, Broke Village is the sleepy, soulful heart of the Hunter Valley wine country. With a name that begs for a pun (and locals happily oblige), this tiny settlement trades the flash of Pokolbin for dirt roads, century-old vines, and a pace that forces you to slow down. It’s the kind of place where the cellar door is a rustic shed, the kangaroos outnumber the cars, and the best view comes with a glass of Semillon in hand.
Highlights & What to See
- Broke Village Wine Trail – A cluster of family-run wineries such as Briar Ridge, Mount Broke Wines, and Krinklewood, known for organic practices and small-batch Semillon, Shiraz, and Verdelho. Many offer tastings in converted stables or under string-lit pergolas.
- Brokenback Range Lookout – A short, steep drive up Broke Road delivers panoramic views over the valley’s patchwork of vineyards and the distant Barrington Tops. Perfect for sunset photography.
- Broke General Store & Café – The village hub serving excellent coffee, house-made pies, and a small selection of local produce. Grab a picnic basket here before heading to the vineyards.
- Broke Village Hall & Markets – Held on the first Saturday of the month, these low-key markets feature artisan bread, honey, olive oil, and live folk music. A true slice of country life.
- Wollombi Brook – A serene spot for a paddle or riverside walk, especially after rain. Look for platypus at dawn near the Broke bridge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Broke rewards a leisurely approach. Allocate half a day to visit three to four cellar doors, stopping for lunch at the general store or a picnic among the vines. If you’re a keen photographer or wine geek, stay overnight at a cottage or farm stay to catch the golden hour over the Brokenback Range and enjoy a long dinner at one of the vineyard restaurants. A full day is ideal if you plan to explore the nearby national park or do a longer hike.
