Bombah Point is a serene, off-the-beaten-track destination on the northern edge of the Myall Lakes system, where the narrow channel of the Bombah Broadwater meets the lower Myall River. This is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've discovered a secret — a quiet launch point for exploring the labyrinthine waterways, ancient paperbark forests, and the wild, windswept beaches of the nearby coast. It's a favourite among kayakers, fishermen, and anyone craving a genuine escape into untouched nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Myall Lakes National Park — Paddle or cruise through the shimmering network of lakes and rivers, keeping an eye out for sea eagles, black swans, and the occasional goanna sunning on a log.
- Bombah Point Ferry — A tiny, free cable ferry that crosses the narrow channel — a charming, old-school way to continue your journey south to Hawks Nest or north to the Pacific Highway.
- Mungo Brush Rainforest Walk — A short, easy boardwalk through a lush, cool patch of subtropical rainforest, with towering cabbage tree palms and the sound of bellbirds echoing overhead.
- Kite & Surf at Stockton Beach — Accessible via 4WD from Bombah Point, the vast Stockton Beach stretches for 32 km, offering epic sandboarding, kite-surfing, and wild, empty dunes.
- Fishing & Crabbing — The Bombah Broadwater and Myall River are renowned for flathead, bream, and mud crabs — bring your gear or hire a tinny from nearby Hawks Nest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day exploring Bombah Point and its surrounds. If you're paddling or fishing, plan for at least 4–5 hours to really soak in the tranquillity. For a more thorough taste of the Myall Lakes region — including a walk at Mungo Brush, a cruise across the lakes, and a drive along the beach — allow a full day. Those with a 4WD can easily extend the trip by heading south along Stockton Beach to Anna Bay, making it a memorable loop from the Hunter Valley.
