Anna Bay is a coastal village at the southern end of Port Stephens, where the vast Stockton Bight sand dunes meet the Tasman Sea. This is a place of dramatic natural contrasts – towering sand dunes, wild surf beaches, and calm bay waters – making it a playground for adventurers and a serene escape for beach lovers. The town itself is low-key, with a handful of cafés and holiday homes, but the real draw is the extraordinary landscape that surrounds it.
Highlights & What to See
- Stockton Bight Sand Dunes – The largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. Quad bike tours and sandboarding are the classic ways to experience this surreal desert-like landscape.
- Birubi Beach – A stunning stretch of surf beach at the base of the dunes. It’s patrolled in season and great for swimming, but always check conditions – rips can be strong.
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk – A short but steep 2.2km return walk in nearby Nelson Bay offering panoramic views over Anna Bay, the dunes, and offshore islands. Best at sunrise or sunset.
- Worimi Conservation Lands – These protected dunes and coastal forests are culturally significant to the Worimi people. Guided 4WD tours provide insight into Aboriginal heritage and the fragile ecosystem.
- Anna Bay Surf – Consistent waves attract surfers, particularly around the Birubi Beach point break. Lessons are available for beginners.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day sufficient to experience the dunes, hit the beach, and do the Tomaree walk. If you’re keen on a quad bike tour or sandboarding, arrive early to avoid the midday heat and crowds. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying two nights – one day for adventure, another for beach lounging and exploring the Port Stephens coastline. Sunset over the dunes is a must-see.
