Tucked between the Budawang Range and the Pacific, Bendalong is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the NSW South Coast that feels a world away from the tourist crowds. This is the kind of place where you kick off your shoes, breathe in salt air, and let the rhythm of the waves set your pace. With a pristine beach, a peaceful lake, and easy access to the region's natural wonders, Bendalong is a quiet base for exploring the wilder side of the Shoalhaven.
Highlights & What to See
- Bendalong Beach – A sweeping, uncrowded stretch of sand perfect for long walks, swimming, and surfing. The southern end is patrolled in summer, while the northern end offers a more secluded vibe.
- Lake Conjola – Just north, this large saltwater lake is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Watch for pelicans and black swans gliding across the still water.
- Bendalong Point – A rocky headland at the beach's southern end, offering panoramic views of the coastline and a great spot for whale watching (May–November).
- Booderee National Park – A 20-minute drive south, this stunning park on Wreck Bay is a must for its white-sand beaches, Aboriginal rock art, and excellent bushwalks. Don't miss the botanical gardens and the historic Cape St George Lighthouse.
- Pebbly Beach – Famous for its friendly eastern grey kangaroos that lounge on the sand, this beach is a short drive south and offers a unique photo op.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bendalong itself is compact – you can see its main beach and lake in a morning or afternoon. For a relaxing stay, allow two to three nights to unwind, swim, and explore the surrounding national parks. A day trip to Booderee National Park and Pebbly Beach fills a full day, while a longer stay lets you kayak Lake Conjola or do the longer walks in Booderee. If you're self-driving the South Coast, Bendalong makes a peaceful one- or two-night stop between Sydney and the South Coast's bigger towns.
