Just a short drive from the historic port of South West Rocks, Arakoon National Park is a compact coastal gem on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. This pocket-sized park packs in a surprising diversity: sweeping beaches, dramatic headlands, lush littoral rainforest, and a fascinating colonial past. It’s the kind of place where you can swim in the morning, explore a convict-built lighthouse in the afternoon, and watch kangaroos graze at dusk – all without moving your car far.
Highlights & What to See
- Trial Bay Gaol – Perched on a rocky headland, this imposing 19th-century prison offers a gripping glimpse into Australia’s convict era. The ruins are wonderfully atmospheric, with sweeping ocean views and informative displays.
- Little Bay & Gap Beach – Two pristine, sheltered beaches perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply lazing on the sand. The clear, calm waters of Little Bay are especially family-friendly.
- Horseshoe Bay Lookout – A short walk leads to this panoramic viewpoint overlooking the crescent-shaped bay and the gaol. It’s a prime spot for whale watching during migration season (May–November).
- Arakoon Walking Track – An easy 2.5 km loop that winds through coastal heath, casuarina forest, and past the ruins of the old jetty. Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos and lace monitors.
- Laggers Point – This rocky headland offers dramatic coastal scenery and is a popular fishing spot. The views back towards Trial Bay are stunning at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors can cover the park’s main attractions in a half-day, especially if you’re not planning a long beach stay. Arrive mid-morning to explore the gaol and do the walking track before lunch, then spend the afternoon swimming at Little Bay or Gap Beach. If you’re a keen photographer or history buff, you could easily fill a full day here. For a more leisurely pace, combine your visit with a stay in South West Rocks.
