Yering is a tiny, historic hamlet in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, where dirt roads lead to cellar doors and the pace of life slows to a pleasant crawl. This is the Hunter at its most intimate – think boutique wineries, old stone buildings, and kangaroos grazing at dusk. Yering is less about ticking sights off a list and more about soaking up the unhurried rhythm of wine country.
Highlights & What to See
- De Bortoli Wines Hunter Valley – A must-stop for its acclaimed sticky wines and the rustic-chic Il Casale restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas and antipasti with valley views.
- Peterson House – Known for its sparkling wines and a sun-drenched patio perfect for a lazy lunch overlooking the vines.
- Krinklewood Biodynamic Wines – A lovely, certified-biodynamic vineyard set around a French-provincial homestead, with a shady garden for tastings.
- Briar Ridge Vineyard – One of the region's most photogenic cellar doors, with a striking modern tasting room and a scenic picnic area.
- Yarraman Estate – A small, family-run winery producing excellent semillon and shiraz, often with the winemaker pouring.
- Wine Country Cycle Tours – Explore the back roads and vineyards by bike; a relaxed way to taste without the worry of driving.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yering is best savoured over half a day – three to four hours is enough to visit two or three cellar doors and enjoy a leisurely lunch. To fully unwind, combine it with a full day in the broader Hunter Valley, staying overnight in nearby Pokolbin or Lovedale. The area is compact, so you can easily pedal between wineries or hop out of the car for a quick tasting.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Pokolbin – The Hunter's beating heart, with dozens more cellar doors, restaurants, and the Hunter Valley Gardens.
- Lovedale – A quieter sub-region with excellent boutique wineries and the Lovedale Long Lunch events.
- Rothbury – Home to the historic Rothbury Estate and the Hunter Valley Distillery for a change of pace.
- Broke – A charming village with a rustic pub, more wineries, and the gateway to the Wollemi National Park.
