Werrikimbe National Park is a pristine wilderness sanctuary in the heart of the Hunter Valley region, offering a rare escape into ancient Gondwana rainforests, dramatic escarpments, and cascading waterfalls. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed park is a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and those seeking solitude amid some of Australia’s most significant temperate rainforests. With its cool-climate altitude and lush, moss-draped landscapes, Werrikimbe feels a world away from the wine country below.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Lookout – A breathtaking lookout at 1,200 metres offering panoramic views over the Hastings Valley and, on clear days, all the way to the coast. It’s the park’s most accessible viewpoint.
- Rufous Scrub-bird Trail – A superb 6 km walk through ancient Antarctic beech forest, where you might spot the elusive rufous scrub-bird or hear the whipcrack call of a lyrebird.
- Brushy Mountain Trail – A challenging 14 km return hike that rewards with waterfall views, fern gullies, and the chance to see the rare parma wallaby.
- Bishops Creek Picnic Area – A serene spot for a lunch break beside a clear, rocky creek, surrounded by towering eucalypts and tree ferns.
- Night Sky Viewing – With minimal light pollution, the park is a brilliant spot for stargazing; bring a blanket and binoculars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to explore the park’s highlights, ideally starting early from the Hunter Valley. If you’re a keen hiker, consider an overnight stay at the basic campground or one of the remote bush camps to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness. Many visitors combine a morning walk with a scenic drive to Point Lookout and a picnic lunch, then head back to the valley by late afternoon.
