Straddling the New South Wales–Queensland border, the Tweed Valley is a lush, subtropical paradise that feels a world away from the coast’s busy beach towns. Carved by the ancient Tweed Volcano, this fertile valley is ringed by the green caldera of Mount Warning (Wollumbin) and offers a landscape of rolling hills, banana plantations, and winding rivers. The region has a laid-back, creative energy, with a thriving food scene, boutique farms, and a strong Bundjalung cultural heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Warning (Wollumbin) – The remnant central plug of an ancient shield volcano; the sunrise summit walk is legendary, offering the first rays of sunlight in mainland Australia. Note: the summit track is currently closed to protect Aboriginal cultural values; check current access.
- Mavis’s Kitchen – A beloved farm-to-table restaurant set in a restored 1930s homestead, serving seasonal dishes made with produce from the surrounding garden and local growers.
- Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre – An award-winning gallery with stunning views over the valley, housing a permanent collection of works by one of Australia’s most celebrated still-life painters.
- Crystal Creek & Minyon Falls – Swim in the clear, cool waters of Crystal Creek or hike to the dramatic 100-metre Minyon Falls in Nightcap National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area.
- Uki & the Tweed Valley Farm Gate Trail – The tiny village of Uki is a hub for artisans and organic growers; follow the farm gate trail to pick your own fruit, buy macadamias, and sample local cheeses and honey.
- Centenary Lakes & the Tweed River – Kayak or paddleboard on the calm, mangrove-lined Tweed River near Murwillumbah, or stroll around Centenary Lakes, a peaceful spot for birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Tweed Valley at least two full days to soak up its relaxed rhythm. Day one: explore Murwillumbah’s markets and gallery, then head to Uki for lunch and a farm gate wander. Day two: rise early for the Mount Warning sunrise (or a lower-elevation walk if the summit is closed), then cool off at Crystal Creek or Minyon Falls. A third day lets you explore the northern reaches around Tyalgum or take a scenic drive through the caldera rim.
