Mount Alexander

Rising abruptly from the fertile valley floor, Mount Alexander offers one of the Hunter Valley's most rewarding lookout experiences. This former volcanic plug, now a protected nature reserve, provides sweeping 360-degree views across the patchwork of vineyards, the distant Brokenback Range, and the meandering Hunter River. It’s a favourite for sunrise and sunset walks, where the golden light transforms the landscape into a painter’s palette. The short but steep climb is a perfect leg-stretcher between wine tastings, and the relative quiet compared to the cellar doors below makes it a serene counterpoint to your Hunter Valley itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–1.5 hours here, which allows for a leisurely walk to the summit, plenty of photo stops, and a quiet sit at the top. If you’re keen on sunrise photography or birdwatching, budget up to 2 hours. Pair it with a morning at a nearby winery – the walk works up an appetite for a cellar-door tasting or a long lunch.
