Buried in the red earth of north-western NSW, Lightning Ridge is the world’s only source of precious black opal – a gem that glows like a captive rainbow. This quirky outback town is as famous for its eccentric characters as for its underground galleries and steaming artesian baths. A visit here feels like stepping into a frontier where prospectors still chase fortune with pick and shovel, and where the landscape is pockmarked with mullock heaps and mysterious ‘opal towns’ carved into the dirt.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk-in opal mines: Don a hard hat and descend into the cool, dark tunnels of a working mine – Chambers of the Black Hand and The Miners’ Experience offer genuine underground tours.
- Art & opal galleries: The John Murray Gallery showcases some of the finest black opal in the world, while the Lightning Ridge Opal Centre lets you watch cutters at work.
- Artesian bore baths: Soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the public bore baths – a blissful end to a dusty day of fossicking.
- Fossicking for your own opal: Head to the designated fossicking areas (permits available) and try your luck – even beginners often find colour.
- Car Door Tours: Join a local guide for a quirky tour of the town’s underground homes, bottle houses and the famous ‘car door’ art installations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two full days gives you time to explore the opal mines, soak in the baths and try fossicking. If you’re short on time, one day will cover the main galleries and a mine tour, but you’ll miss the slow outback rhythm. Add an extra day if you want to drive out to the Grawin opal fields or the remote Glengarry Hilton – a pub built into the side of a hill.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Narrabri – gateway to Mount Kaputar National Park and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, 2 hours south-east.

- Bourke – the ‘back o’ Bourke’ experience with paddle steamers and outback history, 2.5 hours north-west.
