Spread across the rolling hills and fertile valleys west of the Hunter Valley, the Central West is a captivating region of historic gold-rush towns, world-class wineries, and vast national parks. It's a place where heritage pubs sit alongside cutting-edge cellar doors, and where you can wander through convict-built villages one day and hike through eucalypt forests the next. For international travellers, it offers a quintessential taste of inland New South Wales — slower paced than the coast but rich in stories and flavours.
Highlights & What to See
- Mudgee: A standout wine region with over 40 cellar doors, many specialising in shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The town itself is a gem of Victorian architecture, with a thriving café culture and excellent farmers' markets.
- Bathurst: Australia's oldest inland settlement, famous for the Mount Panorama racetrack. Beyond motorsport, explore the heritage-listed city centre, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, and the serene Abercrombie River National Park.
- Orange: Surrounded by extinct volcanoes, this cool-climate wine region produces superb chardonnay and pinot noir. The city's food scene is outstanding, with farm-to-table restaurants and a celebrated annual food festival.
- Hill End: A beautifully preserved ghost town from the 1870s gold rush. Wander the dusty streets, visit the Royal Hotel, and see the historic village — it's like stepping into a living museum.
- Wollemi National Park: A vast wilderness of sandstone canyons and eucalypt forests, home to the prehistoric Wollemi Pine. The park offers exceptional bushwalking, from short walks to multi-day treks.
Suggested Time to Spend
With a hire car, plan at least four to five days to do the region justice. Spend two days exploring Mudgee and its vineyards, one day in Bathurst (including a lap of Mount Panorama), and split the remaining time between Orange and a detour to Hill End. If you're short on time, focus on Mudgee and Orange for the best wine-and-food experience, or Bathurst and Hill End for history buffs. The distances between towns are manageable — most drives are under two hours.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
