Tucked into the rolling hills at the southern edge of the Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich is the region’s most enchanting wine country escape. While the main Hunter tourist trail buzzes with bus tours and large cellar doors, this pocket remains gloriously peaceful — a landscape of vine-striped slopes, historic homesteads and family-run wineries where the welcome is as warm as the Semillon. It’s the kind of place where you can taste a shiraz straight from the barrel, picnic under a giant fig tree, and feel like you’ve stumbled onto a secret.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting without the crowds – Broke Fordwich is home to boutique producers like Pokolbin Estate, Krinklewood and Mistletoe Wines, where you can linger over handcrafted Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho in rustic cellar doors or gardens.
- Broke Village – This tiny settlement packs a punch with the Broke General Store (a must for coffee, woodfired bread and local produce) and the historic Broke Hotel, a classic country pub with a sunny beer garden.
- Scenic drives and back roads – The loop through Fordwich Siding Road and Broke Road offers postcard views of vineyards, horse paddocks and the distant Brokenback Range.
- Wollombi Brook – Pack a picnic and find a shady spot along the brook; in warmer months it’s a popular swimming hole for locals.
- Local food producers – Look out for farm gates selling olives, honey and seasonal fruit, and stop at Bruschetta & Co. for woodfired pizzas and antipasti platters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Broke Fordwich rewards a relaxed pace. A half-day is enough to visit three or four cellar doors and enjoy a long lunch, but you’ll appreciate a full day — or even an overnight stay — to soak up the atmosphere. Aim to arrive mid-morning, taste through the morning, lunch at a winery or the Broke Hotel, then spend a lazy afternoon exploring the back roads or reading under a tree. If you’re on a Hunter Valley road trip, it’s the perfect spot to slow down after the bustle of Pokolbin.
