Birubi Beach is the northernmost patrolled beach in the Port Stephens area, a wild and beautiful stretch of sand where the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes meet the Tasman Sea. With its dramatic dune backdrop, powerful surf, and almost endless shoreline, Birubi offers a raw, untamed coastal experience that feels a world away from the more sheltered beaches of the bay. It’s a favourite for surfers, 4WD enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to feel the full force of the ocean.
Highlights & What to See
- Stockton Bight Sand Dunes: The towering dunes behind the beach are the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. You can explore them on foot, by 4WD (a permit is required), or on a guided quad bike or sandboarding tour – an unforgettable adrenaline rush.
- Surfing: Birubi is one of the best surf breaks in Port Stephens, offering consistent beach breaks that work on a range of swells. It’s best for experienced surfers due to strong rips and shifting sandbanks.
- Beach Driving: A 4WD permit allows you to drive along the beach and onto the dunes, making it a popular spot for fishing, camping, and exploring the remote coastline. The drive north towards Stockton Beach is an epic journey.
- Whale Watching: During migration season (June–November), you can spot humpback whales from the beach or the dune lookout – an awe-inspiring sight.
- Sunset Views: The beach faces east, but the dunes catch the last light, making for spectacular sunset photo opportunities over the sand hills.
Suggested Time to Spend
Birubi Beach is best enjoyed as a half-day or full-day outing. If you’re just coming for a swim and a walk, allow 2–3 hours. For a more immersive experience – say, a 4WD adventure, sandboarding, or a surf session – plan for at least 4–6 hours. Many visitors combine it with a morning at the beach and afternoon exploring the dunes. If you have a 4WD and a permit, you could easily spend a full day driving the beach and stopping for picnics and fishing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson Bay: The main town of Port Stephens, 15 minutes south, with great cafes, restaurants, and dolphin-watching cruises.
- Anna Bay: Just around the headland, Anna Bay offers calmer swimming and is the launching point for many dune tours. It’s also a good spot for a post-beach coffee.
- Tomaree National Park: A short drive away, this park features the iconic Tomaree Head summit walk with panoramic views of the bay, islands, and coastline.
- Port Stephens Winery & Distillery: After a day on the sand, head to the nearby wine region for a tasting at a vineyard or distillery – a perfect contrast to the rugged beach.
- Stockton Beach: If you have a 4WD, you can drive north from Birubi along Stockton Beach all the way to Stockton (near Newcastle), passing shipwrecks and endless dunes.
