Bega
Bega might not be the first name that springs to mind when planning a New South Wales road trip, but this tidy dairy town on the Far South Coast rewards those who detour off the Princes Highway. It's the heart of the Bega Valley, a lush, green landscape that supplies much of the state's milk and cheese. The town itself is compact and easy to navigate, with a strong community feel and a surprising number of excellent cafés and bakeries. The real draw, however, is the chance to see behind the scenes of one of Australia's most iconic food brands and to explore the surrounding national parks and coastline. Bega is a perfect stop for a night or two as you travel between Sydney and Melbourne, offering a genuine taste of rural life without the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Bega Cheese Heritage Centre – The town's star attraction. Housed in a former butter factory, this interactive museum tells the story of Bega's dairy industry, and yes, you can sample and buy all the cheese varieties. The on-site café does a mean cheese toastie.
- Bega Valley Regional Gallery – A surprising cultural gem with rotating exhibitions of contemporary Australian art, often with a regional focus. Entry is free.
- Bega River Walk – A pleasant, easy stroll along the riverbank that takes you past historic bridges and through scenic parkland. Keep an eye out for platypuses at dawn or dusk.
- Bega Pioneer Museum – Run by local volunteers, this museum is a treasure trove of farming and domestic artefacts that give insight into the area's settler history.
- Mumbulla Mountain – A sacred Aboriginal site and a great short bushwalk. The summit offers panoramic views over the valley and coast. The track is a moderate 3 km return.
- Bega Farmers Market – Held on the second Saturday of each month, it's a vibrant showcase of local produce: cheeses, organic vegetables, artisan breads, and free-range meats.
Suggested Time to Spend
One to two nights is ideal. If you're just passing through, you can easily see the Cheese Heritage Centre and do a river walk in a few hours. But to fully appreciate the region – including the nearby beaches and national parks – stay two nights. That gives you a full day to explore the valley, perhaps with a morning at the market (if it's the right Saturday), an afternoon walk at Mumbulla Mountain, and a relaxed evening at a local pub. Bega is small enough that you won't feel rushed, and the pace of life here encourages you to slow down.
