Whitsundays

Welcome to the Whitsundays, a shimmering archipelago of 74 tropical islands off the coast of Queensland, not New South Wales. This is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, where powdery white silica sand meets turquoise water and lush national parks tumble down to the sea. The hub is Airlie Beach, a laid-back coastal town with a vibrant esplanade, buzzing marina, and easy access to island adventures.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself at least three full days to experience the Whitsundays properly. Day one: explore Airlie Beach and take a sunset cruise. Day two: a full-day sailing trip to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Day three: a reef snorkelling or diving excursion. If you have more time, consider an overnight sailing tour or a few days on Hamilton Island for a resort-style break. The pace is relaxed – you're on island time.
