Stretching across the heart of the Central Coast, Tuggerah Lake is a vast, shallow coastal lagoon that feels more like an inland sea. Its calm, tannin-stained waters are perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing, while the surrounding bushland and wetlands teem with birdlife. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the eucalyptus-scented air, and watch the light shift across the water from dawn to dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- Paddle the lake – Hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the foreshore at The Entrance or Long Jetty and glide through the placid channels, weaving past black swans and pelicans.
- Long Jetty – This iconic wooden jetty, built in 1915, stretches 350 metres into the lake and offers stunning photo opportunities, especially at sunset when the sky blazes orange and pink.
- Birdwatching at Wyrrabalong National Park – The park’s lake edge and coastal heath are home to honeyeaters, rosellas, and the occasional sea eagle. Take the short Rainforest Walk to see towering cabbage tree palms.
- The Entrance – Where the lake meets the sea, this lively town has a family-friendly ocean bath, a pelican-feeding platform (daily at 3:30pm), and a long surf beach.
- Saltwater fishing – Drop a line from the shoreline or a boat for flathead, bream, and whiting. The lake is a popular spot for local anglers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the lake’s southern shores and jetties, but to truly appreciate its serenity, plan a full day. Combine a morning paddle or bike ride along the lakefront with a picnic lunch at one of the many shaded parks, then watch the sunset from Long Jetty. If you’re staying in the area, an evening stroll along the lake is a lovely way to wind down.
