On the northern side of Avoca Beach, The Pass is a sublime stretch of sand where the Pacific rollers hit a rocky headland and peel into long, clean walls. It's the Central Coast's most consistent and photogenic surf break, but even if you never paddle out, the scene is pure coastal magic — golden sand, sapphire water, and a laid-back energy that feels a world away from Sydney's packed beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Surf the Pass: This right-hand point break is a favourite among locals and visiting surfers. Best at mid-tide with a south-east swell, it offers rides up to 200 metres. Even beginners can catch waves on small days, but respect the locals and check conditions first.
- Avoca Beach Rock Pool: A short walk south, this ocean-fed pool is perfect for a safe swim when the surf is pumping. It's a classic Aussie rock pool with great views back to the headland.
- Coastal Walk to Avoca Beach: Follow the path over the headland for stunning panoramic views of the coastline. In spring, wildflowers dot the scrub, and you might spot dolphins or whales (May–November).
- Avoca Beachside Markets: Held on the fourth Sunday of each month at the nearby surf club, these markets offer local crafts, fresh produce, and a relaxed community vibe.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here, combining a surf or swim with a walk and a coffee at one of the cafés along Avoca Beach's main strip. If you're keen to surf the Pass at its best, arrive early (before 8am) to secure a park and score glassy waves. For a full beach day, pack a picnic and stay through the afternoon; the light on the headland is gorgeous late in the day.
