Stretching for nearly seven kilometres between Broken Head and Lennox Head, Tallows Beach is the wild, untamed heart of the Byron Bay coastline. This is not a manicured swimming beach — it's a powerful, surf-pounded stretch of golden sand backed by vegetated dunes and the hum of the nearby national park. The energy here is raw and elemental, attracting surfers, long-boarders, and walkers who crave solitude and big skies. The beach is part of the Cape Byron State Conservation Area, and the only access is via a short track from the Broken Head car park, which keeps it blissfully uncrowded even in peak season.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing at The Pass and Watego's: While not directly at Tallows, the southern end merges with these iconic breaks — catch some of Australia's best longboard waves or watch the pros from the headland.
- Whale-watching from the headland: Between June and November, humpback whales migrate close to shore; the elevated vantage points near the access track offer front-row seats.
- Coastal walk to Broken Head: A stunning 3 km return trail through rainforest and along cliff tops, with panoramic ocean views and the chance to spot sea eagles and dolphins.
- Dune and heath exploration: The fragile dune system behind the beach hosts unique coastal flora; stick to designated paths to protect the environment.
- Sunrise and sunset photography: The long, uninterrupted horizon makes for dramatic light shows, with the Cape Byron lighthouse glowing in the distance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to properly experience Tallows Beach. Arrive early morning to watch the sunrise and enjoy the beach before the wind picks up. Combine a 2–3 hour surf session or a long walk along the sand with a picnic on the dunes. If you're keen on the Broken Head walk, add another 1.5 hours. Many travellers find themselves lingering longer — the hypnotic rhythm of the waves and the sense of remoteness make it easy to while away an entire afternoon.
