Simspons Gap
Simspons Gap is a dramatic cleft in the rugged escarpment of the Central Coast hinterland, offering a wild and uncrowded bushwalking experience. This natural sandstone gorge, carved by a creek over millennia, rewards hikers with cool, fern-lined pools and a sense of remote tranquility just an hour's drive north of Sydney. It's a place for those who crave genuine wilderness without the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap Walk: A challenging but rewarding 6 km return hike that descends into the gorge, crossing the creek several times and passing through lush rainforest. The payoff is a series of clear, deep rock pools perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Aboriginal Rock Art: Keep an eye out for faint hand stencils and other cultural markings on the sandstone walls, evidence of the Darkinjung people's long connection to this land.
- Birdwatching: The gorge is a haven for lyrebirds, wonga pigeons, and bell miners. Listen for their calls echoing off the cliffs.
- Picnic at the Trailhead: The grassy area near the carpark has basic facilities and is a lovely spot for a picnic before or after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full half-day (3–4 hours) to properly experience Simpsons Gap. The walk itself takes 2–3 hours at a steady pace, plus time for swimming, photography, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the heat and to have the gorge almost to yourself.
