Rising dramatically from the turquoise waters just off Coffs Harbour, Muttonbird Island is a spectacular nature reserve and one of the best places on the New South Wales coast to witness seabird colonies up close. Connected to the mainland by a narrow breakwater, this rocky outcrop is a haven for wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds), which nest in burrows across the island from spring to autumn. The short but steep walk to the summit rewards you with sweeping views of the Solitary Islands Marine Park and the surrounding coastline, making it a must-visit for bird lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a dose of wild coastal beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours for the walk and birdwatching. For the best experience, time your visit for late afternoon (around 4–5 pm) to witness the dramatic return of the shearwaters at dusk. The walk itself takes about 30–40 minutes return, but you'll want extra time to soak in the views and watch the seabirds. Combine this with a morning at Coffs Harbour's nearby beaches or a visit to the Solitary Islands Aquarium for a full day out.
