Perched at 1,000 metres in the Blue Mountains, Mount Tomah Botanic Garden is a cool-climate wonderland that feels a world away from Sydney’s coastal heat. This satellite of the Royal Botanic Garden sprawls across 28 hectares of manicured lawns, rainforest pockets and sweeping vistas over the Grose Valley. It’s a blissful spot for a slow wander, a picnic with a view, or a deep dive into Australia’s unique flora.
Highlights & What to See
- The Rock Garden – a sculptural cascade of sandstone boulders planted with alpine and subalpine species from around the globe
- Rainforest Walk – a short boardwalk through a remnant of cool-temperate rainforest, where tree ferns and mosses thrive in the mist
- Banksia & Grevillea Collections – a vibrant showcase of iconic Australian plants, alive with honeyeaters and lorikeets
- The National Rhododendron Garden – a spectacular spring display of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias in peak bloom (September–November)
- Lookout Points – several viewpoints along the escarpment edge, offering sweeping views over the Blue Mountains and, on clear days, all the way to the coast
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to explore the main garden loops, enjoy a picnic or café lunch, and soak in the views. If you’re a keen botanist or photographer, allow a full day to wander the less-trodden paths and seasonal displays. The garden is open daily from 10am to 4pm (to 5pm in daylight saving), so plan to arrive by early afternoon at the latest.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Blackheath – a charming mountain village 15 minutes’ drive south, with excellent cafés, antiques shops and access to the Grand Canyon walk
- Mount Wilson – a historic hamlet of grand gardens and cool-climate trees, perfect for a detour in autumn
- Bells Line of Road – the scenic route through apple orchards and sandstone outcrops, linking the garden to the historic town of Richmond
- Blue Mountains National Park – the garden sits within the park’s boundaries, so you can easily combine a visit with a walk to nearby Waterfall Lookout or the short track to the base of the waterfall
