Mogo
Just a 10-minute drive south of Batemans Bay, Mogo is a tiny gold-rush town that punches well above its weight. Its main street is a jumble of heritage buildings housing art galleries, quirky boutiques, and a famous lolly shop. Surrounded by dry eucalypt forest and close to the coast, Mogo makes an easy detour on a drive between Sydney and the South Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Mogo Zoo – A small, intimate zoo with a strong conservation focus; get up close to white lions, Sumatran tigers, and red pandas.
- Mogo Gold Rush Town – A recreated 1860s village where you can pan for gold, explore a mine tunnel, and see horse-drawn wagons.
- Mogo Village Shops – Browse the Mogo Lolly Shop (a rainbow of old-fashioned sweets), the Woodworks Gallery, and artisan pottery studios.
- Bingie Dreaming Track – A short walking trail through bushland with interpretive signs about Aboriginal culture and local flora.
- Mogo State Forest – Drive or cycle through towering spotted gum forests; look for lyrebirds and wallabies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day in Mogo – enough time to visit the zoo or gold-rush town, wander the main street, and grab a coffee. If you want to do both attractions plus a bushwalk, plan for a full day. Mogo works well as a lunch stop en route to Batemans Bay or as a base for a night or two in a local B&B.
