Minnamurra Rainforest, part of the Budderoo National Park, offers an immersive subtropical experience just a two-hour drive south of Sydney. The centrepiece is a spectacular elevated boardwalk that winds through towering palm forests and past cascading waterfalls, making it one of the most accessible ancient rainforests in New South Wales. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the calls of lyrebirds, creating a sensory journey that feels worlds away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Falls Walk – The 2.6 km loop boardwalk is the star, taking you through lush fern gullies and past the dramatic Minnamurra Falls. The elevated path means you're eye-level with the canopy, spotting satin bowerbirds and brush turkeys.
- Lookout Points – Several platforms offer panoramic views of the waterfall cascading into the gorge below; perfect for photos, especially after rain when the flow is strongest.
- Visitor Centre – A small but informative centre with displays on the local Aboriginal heritage and the rainforest's ecology. Grab a map and ask rangers about recent wildlife sightings.
- Picnic & BBQ Areas – Well-maintained spots near the entrance, ideal for a post-walk lunch surrounded by towering eucalypts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 2–3 hours to properly enjoy the boardwalk walk, including stops at lookouts and the visitor centre. If you're keen on birdwatching or photography, plan for a half-day. The walk is easy and suitable for most fitness levels, but the boardwalk can be slippery after rain – take your time. Arrive early (before 10am) to avoid crowds and secure a parking spot, especially on weekends.
