Kariong is a small, leafy settlement on the Central Coast of NSW, best known as the gateway to the ancient wonders of Brisbane Water National Park. Its name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of the fresh water', and the area offers a peaceful escape into nature, with dramatic sandstone escarpments, Aboriginal rock art, and lush bushland. While Kariong itself is quiet, its proximity to the Central Coast's highlights makes it an ideal base for a self-drive itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day exploring Kariong and its surrounding natural attractions. A morning walk to the Aboriginal rock art and a picnic lunch at Mount Penang Parklands makes for a lovely half-day trip. For hikers, a full day allows time to tackle a longer section of the Great North Walk or explore more of Brisbane Water National Park. Many travellers combine Kariong with a stop in Gosford or a drive to the nearby beaches of Terrigal and Avoca.
