Stretching between Sydney and Newcastle, the Central Coast is a walker's paradise of golden beaches, coastal lagoons, and ancient rainforest gullies. Whether you're chasing dramatic ocean views or tranquil bushland, these trails offer a genuine escape into nature without the crowds of more famous national parks.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – A spectacular 8.5 km one-way track from Putty Beach to MacMasters Beach, with clifftop lookouts over turquoise water, hidden coves, and the chance to spot whales during migration season.
- Girrakool Loop – An easy 2.5 km walk through lush rainforest along the Mooney Mooney Creek, where you'll find a series of pretty waterfalls and picnic spots. Perfect for a short morning wander.
- Wyrrabalong National Park – Two coastal walks: the 1.5 km Pelican Beach Track winds through coastal banksia scrub, while the 4 km Crackneck Loop rewards with panoramic views from the headland.
- Maitland Bay Track – A moderate 1.5 km descent through angophora forest to a secluded beach, where you can explore the wreck of the SS Maitland (1898) at low tide.
- Kariong Brook Falls – A 4 km return walk in Brisbane Water National Park that leads to a series of cascades and a deep rock pool – a refreshing spot for a swim in warmer months.
Suggested Time to Spend
You could easily fill two to three days exploring the Central Coast's best walks. Dedicate one day to the Bouddi Coastal Walk (allow 3–4 hours, plus time for swimming and lunch at a beachside café). A second day could combine the Girrakool Loop and Kariong Brook Falls in the morning, followed by an afternoon on the Wyrrabalong tracks. If you only have a half-day, pick either the Bouddi or Girrakool – both are manageable and offer distinct landscapes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Pearl Beach – A quiet, sheltered beach with a charming community vibe and access to the Bouddi National Park.
- Mangrove Mountain – Offers a different perspective with elevated bushwalks and orchards; try the Mangrove Creek Dam walk.
