Central Coast National Park is a sprawling mosaic of coastal heath, lush rainforest, and dramatic sea cliffs, offering a wild escape just an hour north of Sydney. This is where the bush meets the beach—kangaroos graze on cliff-top meadows while whales breach offshore. With its network of walking trails, secluded coves, and Aboriginal heritage sites, the park feels like a secret world waiting to be explored.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – This 8.5 km track winds along sandstone cliffs, through spotted gum forests, and down to hidden beaches like Putty Beach and Maitland Bay. Look for sea eagles and, in winter, humpback whales.
- Maitland Bay – A sheltered cove with crystal-clear water, perfect for a swim or snorkel. The wreck of the SS Maitland lies just offshore—a haunting dive site for experienced snorkelers.
- Aboriginal Rock Engravings – At Bouddi Headland, you'll find ancient carvings of whales, fish, and kangaroos etched into the sandstone. A boardwalk leads to the site, with interpretive signs explaining their cultural significance.
- Killcare Heights Lookout – A short walk from the car park rewards you with panoramic views over Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury River. It's a prime spot for sunrise photography.
- Bouddi National Park Discovery Trail – A gentle 1.5 km loop through rainforest, past waterfalls and mossy boulders. Ideal for families or a quick nature fix.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least half a day to do justice to the park. If you're keen on the full Bouddi Coastal Walk, allow 4–5 hours (including stops). For a more relaxed visit, pick two or three highlights—say, the Aboriginal engravings and a swim at Maitland Bay—and you'll be satisfied in 3–4 hours. The park is easily combined with a morning at the beach and lunch in nearby Killcare or Hardys Bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Killcare Beach – A patrolled surf beach with a laid-back vibe and a great café scene. Perfect for a post-walk dip.
- Hardys Bay – A sleepy waterside village with a pub and a general store. Hire a kayak to explore the mangrove-lined creeks.
- Gosford – The regional hub, home to the Australian Reptile Park and the historic Gosford Regional Gallery. A good spot to stock up on supplies.
- Pearl Beach – A quiet, picturesque beach with a community-run café and a bushwalk connecting to the park's northern edge.
- Brisbane Water National Park – Adjacent to the north, offering more bushwalking and Aboriginal sites, including the Basin Track with its stunning cliff views.
