Perched on the easternmost point of mainland Australia, Cape Byron Lighthouse commands a dramatic headland where the Pacific Ocean meets the sky in an endless horizon. This iconic 1901 lighthouse, with its pristine white tower and red dome, is the centrepiece of a stunning coastal reserve that offers some of the best whale-watching and sunrise views on the continent. The surrounding Cape Byron State Conservation Area is a haven for walkers, surfers, and nature lovers, with walking trails winding through rainforest remnants and along cliff tops that drop into turquoise waters.
Highlights & What to See
- Lighthouse Museum & Views: Climb to the top of the lighthouse for 360-degree views over Byron Bay, the hinterland, and the ocean. The small museum inside tells the story of the lighthouse keepers and the area's maritime history.
- Cape Byron Walking Track: This 3.7 km loop takes you from the lighthouse to the beaches below, passing through littoral rainforest, past Aboriginal middens, and offering countless photo stops at lookout points like the 'Most Easterly Point' sign.
- Whale Watching (May–November): The headland is one of Australia's best land-based whale-watching spots. Humpbacks and southern right whales come close to shore during their migration.
- Sunrise at the Lighthouse: Arrive early to watch the sun rise over the Pacific – the first light of day to hit Australian soil. It's a bucket-list experience, especially during the annual Byron Bay Whale Festival.
- Palm Valley & Wategos Beach: Just below the lighthouse, Wategos Beach is a sheltered, patrolled beach perfect for swimming. Nearby Palm Valley is a lush gully with a boardwalk through a remnant of subtropical rainforest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 2–3 hours to fully experience Cape Byron Lighthouse. This gives you time to walk the entire Cape Byron Track, explore the lighthouse and museum, and relax on the beaches below. For sunrise, arrive 30 minutes before first light and plan to stay until mid-morning. If you're combining it with a day in Byron Bay town, start early at the lighthouse, then head into town for brunch and a wander through the markets.
