Canberra Wine Region, often overshadowed by its famous neighbour the Hunter Valley, is a cool-climate gem that's quietly earning a reputation for stellar shiraz, riesling, and pinot noir. Set against the backdrop of rolling hills and the distant Brindabella Ranges, this compact region offers a more intimate, laid-back wine-tasting experience. The cellar doors are unpretentious, the winemakers are happy to chat, and the scenery is pure pastoral bliss. It's a perfect half-day escape from the nation's capital, with a growing food scene that makes it a destination in its own right.
Highlights & What to See
- Clonakilla – The region's superstar, famous for its elegant shiraz-viognier blend. The cellar door is a modern, light-filled space with panoramic vineyard views.
- Mount Majura Vineyard – A biodynamic pioneer producing excellent tempranillo and riesling. The tasting room is cosy and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable.
- Lark Hill Winery – Perched high on the slopes of the Lake George escarpment, this organic winery offers sublime pinot noir and a stunning outlook over the lake (even when it's dry).
- Four Winds Vineyard – A family-run affair with a lively cellar door and woodfired pizza on weekends. Their shiraz and sangiovese are standouts.
- Capital Brewing Co. – For a break from wine, this craft brewery in nearby Pialligo serves excellent ales and a cracking view of the Brindabellas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day (about 6–8 hours) ideal for exploring the region. Start mid-morning at a winery like Mount Majura, then meander along the scenic roads to two or three more cellar doors. Break for lunch at one of the winery restaurants or a picnic among the vines. If you're short on time, a half-day visiting just two or three top producers is still rewarding. For self-drivers, the region is compact enough that you won't spend hours behind the wheel.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra – The capital is just 15 minutes from the first vineyards. Combine a wine tour with a visit to the Australian War Memorial or the National Gallery.
- Murrumbateman – A tiny village with a handful of cellar doors and a lovely country pub. It's the epicentre of the wine region and worth a wander.
- Hall – A historic gold-mining town with a few wineries and a great farmers' market on Saturdays.
- Lake George – A mysterious, often dry lake that's a striking natural feature. Pull over at the lookout for photos.
- Namadgi National Park – If you're keen on hiking, this park offers trails through subalpine wilderness, just a 30-minute drive from the vineyards.
