Botany Bay

Botany Bay, a sweeping expanse of turquoise water and golden sand on the southern outskirts of Sydney, holds a dual identity: it's both a serene natural escape and a site of profound historical significance. As the landing place of Captain Cook in 1770 and the intended site of the First Fleet's settlement, its shores are steeped in stories. Today, the bay offers a perfect blend of coastal walks, Aboriginal heritage sites, and relaxed seaside dining, making it an essential stop on any New South Wales itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Devote at least half a day to explore the main sights: start at the Kamay Botany Bay National Park visitor centre, then drive to La Perouse for lunch and a wander. If you're keen on walking or birdwatching, allow a full day to also include the Cape Baily Track and a kayak trip in Towra Point. The bay can be easily visited as a day trip from Sydney or as a stopover on the drive south.
