Baradine is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path village in the Pilliga Forest region of northern New South Wales, offering a genuine taste of rural Australian life. Surrounded by the vast Pilliga scrub, it’s a base for exploring one of the state’s most significant inland forests, with rich Aboriginal heritage, prolific birdlife, and a deep sense of isolation. The town itself is quiet, with a pub, a general store, and a friendly local community.
Highlights & What to See
- Pilliga Forest Scenic Drive – Follow the self-guided drive through the Pilliga Nature Reserve, passing sand-stone outcrops, wildflower displays (in spring), and historic sites like the old sawmill.
- Birdwatching at the Pilliga – The forest is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with species like the glossy black-cockatoo, superb parrot, and the rare pilliga mouse. The bird hide near the Baradine Creek is a good spot.
- Sculptures in the Scrub – A quirky outdoor gallery of metal sculptures created by local artist John Murray, scattered along the Baradine–Coonabarabran road. Look for the giant emu and the ‘Bushranger’.
- Baradine Creek Walk – A short, easy walk along the creek, where you can spot kangaroos and wallabies at dusk, and learn about the area’s Aboriginal cultural significance.
- Pilliga Pottery – A working pottery studio housed in a historic railway building, where you can watch potters at work and buy unique local ceramics.
Suggested Time to Spend
Baradine is a quick stop rather than a destination in itself. Allow half a day to explore the town and the nearby forest drives, or a full day if you plan to do the full Pilliga scenic loop and visit the pottery. Most travellers use it as a lunch break or overnight stop between the Warrumbungles and the Newell Highway.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Warrumbungle National Park – An hour east, this is one of NSW’s best national parks, with dramatic volcanic peaks, excellent hiking (including the Breadknife and Grand High Tops), and dark-sky stargazing.
- Coonabarabran – The gateway to the Warrumbungles, with the Siding Spring Observatory and the Australian Museum of Astronomy.
- Pilliga Nature Reserve – The forest itself is the main attraction; combine a visit with the nearby Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre for interpretive displays on the area’s ecology and history.
- Narrabri – A larger town on the Namoi River, with the Australian Cotton Centre and the Mount Kaputar National Park.
