Just a 30-minute drive north of Canberra, the Murrumbateman wine region is a cool-climate gem that punches well above its weight. This bucolic stretch of the Canberra District is home to more than 30 cellar doors, many family-run, where shiraz, riesling, and cabernet sauvignon thrive in the region's granite soils and crisp autumns. The vibe is relaxed and unpretentious — think vineyard dogs, rustic tasting rooms, and winemakers happy to chat over a glass of velvety red.
Highlights & What to See
- Clonakilla – The region's flagship winery, famous for its benchmark shiraz-viognier blend. Book a tasting to sample wines that have put Murrumbateman on the world map.
- Lerida Estate – A stunning lakeside vineyard with a focus on pinot noir and riesling. The cellar door overlooks Lake George, making it a perfect spot for a long lunch.
- Helm Wines – One of the district's pioneers, known for exceptional riesling and a charming, old-school tasting room with a working vineyard out back.
- Four Winds Vineyard – A laid-back, family-friendly cellar door with wood-fired pizzas on weekends. Great for a relaxed afternoon with a glass of sangiovese.
- Brindabella Hills Winery – Tucked into the hills, this boutique winery offers a serene setting and standout shiraz and cabernet.
- Murrumbateman Village – Stop by the local pub or the general store for a taste of country life, and check out the nearby lavender farm if you're visiting in summer.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote a full day to exploring the Murrumbateman wine trail. Most cellar doors are open from 10am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays (many also open by appointment midweek). Aim to visit three to four wineries at a leisurely pace, allowing time for a long lunch at one of the vineyard cafes. If you're short on time, a half-day focused on Clonakilla, Lerida Estate, and Helm Wines will give you a solid taste of the region's best.
