Just a 30-minute drive north of Canberra, the Murrumbateman wine region is a cool-climate gem that punches well above its weight. This bucolic stretch of the Canberra District is home to more than 30 cellar doors, many family-run, where shiraz, riesling, and cabernet sauvignon thrive in the region's granite soils and crisp autumns. The vibe is relaxed and unpretentious — think vineyard dogs, rustic tasting rooms, and winemakers happy to chat over a glass of velvety red.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Devote a full day to exploring the Murrumbateman wine trail. Most cellar doors are open from 10am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays (many also open by appointment midweek). Aim to visit three to four wineries at a leisurely pace, allowing time for a long lunch at one of the vineyard cafes. If you're short on time, a half-day focused on Clonakilla, Lerida Estate, and Helm Wines will give you a solid taste of the region's best.
