Zig Zag Railway
Chugging through the rugged Blue Mountains on the Zig Zag Railway is a journey back in time. This heritage steam train (and occasional diesel) winds along a spectacular switchback line carved into the cliffside in the 1860s, offering dizzying views over the Jamison Valley. It's a must-do for train buffs, families, and anyone who loves a scenic ride with a side of engineering history.
Highlights & What to See
- Steam train ride: Climb aboard a beautifully restored locomotive for a 40-minute round trip through sandstone cuttings, over viaducts, and past the original 19th-century stonework.
- Clarence Tunnel: The train plunges into this dark, hand-hewn tunnel – listen for the echo and imagine the labour that built it.
- Top Points Lookout: At the railway's highest point, step out onto the viewing platform for sweeping views across the Megalong and Jamison Valleys.
- Railway Museum: Browse vintage carriages, photographs, and memorabilia that tell the story of the line's construction and its role in opening up the Blue Mountains.
- Engine shed tours: On certain days you can peek into the workshop where volunteers lovingly restore the historic locomotives.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2–3 hours for the full experience: a return journey on the train (about 1.5 hours including stops at the lookout), plus time to explore the museum and wander the platform. If you're a railway enthusiast, you could happily spend half a day here. The railway runs on weekends, public holidays, and school holidays – check the schedule before you go.
