Newnes is a ghost town with a fascinating industrial past, nestled in the remote Wolgan Valley within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Once a bustling oil-shale mining settlement, today it offers a hauntingly beautiful landscape of ruins, bushwalking trails, and a sense of isolation that appeals to history buffs and adventurous travellers. Accessible via a long unsealed road, Newnes rewards those who make the journey with a glimpse into Australia's early 20th-century shale oil industry and the raw beauty of the Wolgan River.
Highlights & What to See
- Newnes Industrial Ruins: Explore the eerie remains of the shale oil works, including the retort buildings, brick chimneys, and the massive concrete foundations that dot the valley floor. Interpretive signs explain the site's history.
- Wolgan River: The river is perfect for a cool dip on a hot day, with clear, shallow pools and sandy banks. It's also a great spot for a picnic.
- Walking Tracks: Several walks start from the campsite, including the short Newnes Plateau Walk and the longer journey to the Glow Worm Tunnel, a disused railway tunnel known for its bioluminescent inhabitants.
- Glow Worm Tunnel: A 400-metre-long tunnel on the old railway line, home to thousands of glow worms. Bring a torch and walk in complete darkness to see their sparkling blue-green lights.
- Historic Cemetery: A small, overgrown cemetery with graves dating back to the early 1900s, offering a poignant connection to the town's past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Newnes, or better yet, camp overnight at the free Newnes Campground to fully soak in the valley's atmosphere. Arrive early to allow time for the ruins and a walk to the Glow Worm Tunnel (allow 2–3 hours return). If you're self-driving, the unsealed road from Lithgow takes about an hour, so factor that into your schedule.
