Kanangra Boyd National Park is a rugged wilderness of dramatic escarpments, deep gorges, and ancient forests in the southern Blue Mountains. Far less visited than its northern neighbours, this park rewards those who make the journey with spectacular lookouts, challenging hikes, and a profound sense of isolation. The star attraction is the Kanangra Walls, a massive sandstone cliff that plunges into the Kanangra Gorge below.
Highlights & What to See
- Kanangra Walls Lookout – The park’s signature view: a sheer sandstone escarpment dropping into a wild gorge. The short walk from the carpark is wheelchair-accessible and offers sunrise or sunset drama.
- Kanangra Main Range Walk – A challenging 14 km return hike that traverses the top of the escarpment, offering panoramic views over the Boyd Plateau and into the Grose Valley. Allow 6-8 hours and carry plenty of water.
- Boyd River Campground – A basic but beautiful bush campsite beside the Boyd River, perfect for overnight stays. Listen for lyrebirds at dawn.
- Kanangra Creek & Waterhole – A steep descent leads to a deep, cool waterhole in the gorge – a rewarding spot for a swim after a hot hike.
- Wildflowers & Birdlife – Spring brings a carpet of boronia and waratahs, while wedge-tailed eagles and peregrine falcons patrol the cliffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the Kanangra Walls area and doing one of the shorter walks. For the full experience, consider an overnight stay at Boyd River Campground – this allows you to tackle the Main Range Walk or combine a day-hike with a sunset at the lookout. If you’re short on time, a half-day from Sydney (2.5 hours drive) is feasible but you’ll only scratch the surface.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jenolan Caves – Just 30 km east, these limestone caves offer guided tours through stunning underground chambers. Combine with Kanangra for a day of above- and below-ground wonders.
- Oberon – A charming highland town known for its trout fishing, local produce, and the Mayfield Garden. Good for a lunch stop or overnight stay.
- Blue Mountains National Park – The iconic Three Sisters, Echo Point, and the many walking trails of the Greater Blue Mountains are a 1.5-hour drive north. Perfect if you’re basing yourself in Katoomba.
- Katoomba & Leura – The cultural and culinary hubs of the Blue Mountains, with excellent cafes, galleries, and antique shops. Use as a base for exploring both Kanangra and the main Blue Mountains sights.
