Govetts Leap
Govetts Leap is one of the Blue Mountains' most dramatic lookout points, offering a heart-stopping panorama of the Grose Valley. Named after William Govett, a surveyor who 'leapt' over the edge on horseback in a legendary feat, this spot delivers sheer cliffs plunging into a wild, forested gorge. It’s less crowded than Echo Point, making it a favourite for those seeking a more intimate encounter with the escarpment’s raw beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Govetts Leap Lookout: The main viewing platform provides a breathtaking, unobstructed vista of the Bridal Veil Falls cascading into the valley below – especially spectacular after rain.
- Bridal Veil Falls: A slender, elegant waterfall that drops 180 metres into the Grose Valley; best viewed from the lookout or on the descent track.
- Pulpit Rock Lookout: A short walk from Govetts Leap, this spur offers a different angle over the valley and a sense of standing on the edge of the world.
- Govetts Leap Descent: A steep but rewarding walking track that drops into the valley, passing through lush rainforest and offering close-up views of the falls.
- Sunrise and Sunset: The lookout faces east, making it a prime spot for sunrise photography, while the cliffs glow golden in the late afternoon light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1–2 hours if you simply want to take in the lookout and short walks. For a more immersive experience, plan 3–4 hours to descend partway into the valley or combine with the nearby Perry’s Lookdown and Anvil Rock walk. Early morning or late afternoon are best for light and fewer crowds.
