Perrys Lookdown is one of the Blue Mountains' most spectacular and least-crowded viewpoints. Perched on the edge of the Grose Valley, this lookout offers a jaw-dropping panorama of rugged sandstone cliffs, deep eucalyptus forests, and the distant haze of the Wollemi National Park. It's a favourite among experienced bushwalkers and photographers seeking a wild, untamed perspective away from the tourist throngs.
Highlights & What to See
- Grose Valley Panorama: The main event – a sweeping view over the valley's sheer cliffs and the wild expanse of the Blue Mountains wilderness.
- Sunrise Spectacle: Arrive early to watch the sun paint the escarpment in gold and orange; the light at dawn is magical and often shrouded in mist.
- Perrys Lookdown Trail: A challenging but rewarding 5.5 km return walk from the car park, descending steeply through heath and woodland to the lookout – allow 2-3 hours return.
- Wildflowers: Spring brings a riot of native blooms along the trail, including waratahs, boronias, and banksias.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, crimson rosellas, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the cliffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2-4 hours here, combining the walk to the lookout with plenty of time to soak in the views. If you're short on time, you can drive to the nearby car park and hike just the last kilometre to the viewpoint, but the full walk is highly recommended for the best experience. Plan to arrive either early morning or late afternoon to avoid the harshest sun and catch the best light.
