Blue Mountains National Park
Blue Mountains National Park is a vast wilderness of dramatic sandstone cliffs, ancient eucalyptus forests, and plunging waterfalls, just a 90-minute drive from Sydney. This World Heritage-listed landscape offers some of Australia’s most iconic bushwalks, lookouts, and Aboriginal rock art sites, making it an essential stop for nature lovers and hikers exploring New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters Lookout at Echo Point – The park’s most famous viewpoint, offering postcard-perfect panoramas of the three sandstone pillars against the Jamison Valley. Arrive early to beat the crowds and catch the morning light.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world, a glass-floored cable car, and a skyway for vertiginous views over the rainforest canopy and Katoomba Falls.
- Grand Canyon Track – A spectacular 6.3 km loop that descends into a lush, fern-lined gorge with tiny waterfalls and mossy rock walls. Allow 3–4 hours for this moderate walk.
- Wentworth Falls – A series of cascades accessible via several trails; the short Wentworth Pass loop (approx. 3 km) delivers close-up views and swimming holes in summer.
- Govetts Leap Lookout – A quieter alternative to Echo Point, with sweeping views of the Grose Valley and the Bridal Veil Falls plunging into the abyss.
- Aboriginal rock art at Red Hands Cave – A short walk from Glenbrook leads to a sheltered overhang with well-preserved hand stencils, providing a tangible link to the area’s traditional Gundungurra and Darug owners.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do justice to the park’s highlights, plan for at least a full day – ideally two if you want to tackle longer walks like the Six Foot Track or the National Pass. Many visitors base themselves in Katoomba or Leura and explore the park in day trips. For a self-drive itinerary, combine a morning walk (e.g., Grand Canyon Track) with an afternoon at Scenic World and a sunset stop at Echo Point. If you’re short on time, a half-day can cover the Three Sisters, a short rainforest walk, and a ride on the Scenic Railway.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katoomba – The main gateway town, with excellent cafés, antique shops, and the atmospheric Carrington Hotel. Start your park visit from here.
- Leura – A prettier, more refined village known for its gardens, boutique shops, and the lovely Leura Cascades. Combine with a walk to the nearby Sublime Point lookout.
- Blackheath – A quieter base with access to the Grose Valley walks, including the challenging but rewarding Grand Canyon Track. Check out the Rhododendron Gardens in spring.
- Jenolan Caves – About an hour’s drive west, these limestone caves offer guided tours through stunning underground chambers. Perfect for a second day of exploration.
- Mount Victoria – The highest town in the Blue Mountains, with historic buildings and access to the Zig Zag Railway, a heritage steam train through the mountains.
