Perched on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, Blackheath is a cool-climate haven known for its dramatic cliff-top lookouts, lush gardens, and a relaxed village atmosphere that feels a world away from Sydney’s hustle. This gateway to the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area offers some of the most jaw-dropping views in the region, especially at sunrise when the mist rolls through the valleys. With a thriving café scene and easy access to epic bushwalks, Blackheath is a perfect base for exploring the wilder side of the mountains.
Highlights & What to See
- Govetts Leap Lookout – Arguably the most iconic view in the Blue Mountains, this lookout peers down into the Grose Valley, with the Bridal Veil Falls cascading 180 metres into the gorge. Arrive early to catch the morning light.
- Grand Canyon Walk – A spectacular 6.3 km loop that descends into a lush, fern-filled canyon, crossing creeks and passing under sandstone overhangs. It’s one of the most rewarding day walks in the area.
- Pulpit Rock Lookout – A short walk from the car park leads to a series of viewpoints that offer a different perspective of the Grose Valley, with fewer crowds than Govetts Leap.
- Anvil Rock – A lesser-known lookout with panoramic views of the Blue Mountains and, on clear days, all the way to Sydney. The walk is short but steep.
- Blackheath Village – Stroll the main street for artisan bakeries, antique shops, and galleries. Don’t miss the Blackheath Growers Market (second Saturday of the month) for local produce and crafts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Blackheath deserves at least a full day to do justice to its lookouts and walks. If you’re short on time, a half-day can cover Govetts Leap and a quick village wander, but overnighting allows you to catch the magic of sunrise over the valleys and enjoy a relaxed dinner at one of the village’s excellent restaurants. Many visitors combine Blackheath with a two- or three-day Blue Mountains itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Mount Victoria – The highest town in the Blue Mountains, with grand historic buildings and access to the Zig Zag Railway and Victoria Pass lookouts.
