Perched on a rocky outcrop above a turquoise reservoir, Zahara de la Sierra is one of Andalucía's most photogenic white villages. Its narrow, winding lanes are lined with flower-filled pots and whitewashed houses, while the ruins of a 13th-century Moorish castle dominate the skyline. This is a place to get lost in, soaking up the timeless atmosphere and the sweeping views across the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Castle of Zahara: Climb to the top of this hilltop fortress for jaw-dropping panoramas of the reservoir, olive groves, and distant mountains. The tower is the best-preserved part.
- Old Town (Casco Antiguo): Meander through cobbled alleys, past the 18th-century Church of Santa María de la Mesa and the Plaza del Rey, where locals gather for tapas.
- Embalse de Zahara-El Gastor: The reservoir offers a striking contrast of deep blue water against white villages. Drive or hike to viewpoints like Mirador de la Ventana.
- Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park: A paradise for walkers and nature lovers, with trails through cork oak forests, limestone gorges, and Spain's highest rainfall area. The sendero del Pinsapar is a highlight.
- White Villages Route (Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos): Zahara is a key stop on this scenic drive through Andalucía's iconic hilltop villages, including Grazalema and Setenil de las Bodegas.
