Setenil de las Bodegas is one of Spain’s most extraordinary white villages, where the town itself is built into and under enormous rock overhangs along the Río Trejo gorge. The sight of houses, bars and restaurants tucked beneath giant boulders is utterly unique, and the experience of wandering the narrow, cave-like streets is unforgettable. This is a place that rewards slow exploration, with a relaxed Andalusian vibe, excellent tapas, and a rich Moorish and Spanish history.
Highlights & What to See
- Calle Cuevas del Sol – The most famous street, where the rock roof forms a natural ceiling over the entire lane. It’s lined with whitewashed houses and lively tapas bars.
- Calle Cuevas de la Sombra – The shady counterpart, equally dramatic and a bit quieter, perfect for photographs.
- Castillo de Setenil – The ruins of a 12th-century Moorish castle atop the hill, offering panoramic views over the town and surrounding olive groves.
- Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación – A striking 16th-century Gothic-Mudéjar church built on the site of a former mosque, with a beautiful coffered ceiling.
- Museo de Setenil – A small museum housed in a cave dwelling, showcasing local archaeology, history and traditional cave-life exhibits.
- Río Trejo walk – Follow the river gorge path to see the rock formations and cave houses from below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Setenil is compact but atmospheric, and you can see the main highlights in half a day. However, to really soak up the character, enjoy a leisurely lunch under the rock, and explore the castle, plan for a full day. If you’re on a road trip through the Pueblos Blancos, an overnight stay allows you to experience the town in the golden evening light and early morning calm.
