Yeh Pulu
Hidden in the lush jungle-clad slopes of Bedulu village, Yeh Pulu is a serene, little-visited rock-cut relief that feels like stumbling onto a secret chapter of Bali's past. Dating from the 14th–15th century, this 25-metre-long frieze depicts scenes of daily life and spiritual figures carved directly into a mossy cliff face. It's a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path cultural gem that rewards travellers who crave authenticity away from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- The Rock-Cut Relief: A continuous narrative of farmers, hunters, and a horse-drawn chariot – one of the few pre-colonial depictions of everyday life in Bali. The main figure, a nobleman with a sword, is thought to represent a local king or deity.
- The Sacred Spring: At the base of the relief, a small spring feeds a stone pool where locals still come to bathe and pray. The water is considered holy, and you'll often see offerings placed around it.
- Surrounding Temple Complex: The site includes a small, active temple (Pura Yeh Pulu) with ornate gates and frangipani-shaded courtyards. Take a moment to observe the quiet rituals.
- Nearby Rice Terraces & Riverside Walks: The path to Yeh Pulu winds through working rice fields and alongside the Petanu River. It's a short, scenic walk that gives you a slice of rural Balinese life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yeh Pulu is compact – you can see the relief and temple in 20–30 minutes. However, factor in 45 minutes to an hour if you include the walk from the car park through the rice fields and a quiet sit by the spring. The site is best visited in the morning (before 9am) when the light hits the carvings and the air is cool. It's a quick but enriching stop, perfect for slotting between larger attractions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave): Just 2 km away, this 9th-century cave temple with its famous demonic mouth entrance is a must-see. Combine both in a half-day loop.
- Ubud: Only 6 km north, Ubud offers endless galleries, yoga studios, and the famous Ubud Monkey Forest. Yeh Pulu makes a calm antidote to Ubud's bustle.
- Gunung Kawi: A short drive east, this 11th-century temple complex features ten towering rock-cut shrines (candi) set in a river gorge. It's more grand and touristy, but stunning.
- Tirta Empul: The holy water temple in Tampaksiring, about 15 minutes north, where you can see Balinese Hindus performing purification rituals. Combine with Yeh Pulu for a day of sacred sites.
